Did you know that Bowel Cancer is the third most common cancer in the U.K.
and with over 16,000 people dying from it each year, makes it the second
leading cause of cancer deaths? (Cancer Research UK, 2005. Cancerstats).
If you are aged 60-74, and registered with a GP you will automatically be sent a free
kit to help detect bowel cancer early. If you are 75 or over please call 0800 707
6060 to request your free kit. The test is carried out in the privacy of your own home and provides a simple way to collect small samples of your bowel motions. You wipe the samples on the kit which is then sent in a hygienically sealed prepaid envelope to a laboratory for testing.
You should receive your results within two weeks of sending your sample and in fact
most people, 98 people out of 100, will receive a normal result. A normal result
does not guarantee that you do not have or will never develop bowel cancer so it is
important to know the symptoms of bowel cancer. If you do receive an unclear or
abnormal result please do not be alarmed this could be caused by other health
issues such as haemorrhoids (piles) or stomach ulcers.
Symptoms of Bowel Cancer
The most common symptoms of bowel cancer to look out for are:
• A persistent change in bowel habit, especially going to the toilet more often or diarrhoea for several weeks
• Bleeding from the back passage without any obvious reason
• Abdominal pain, especially if it is severe;
• A lump in your abdomen.
These symptoms do not necessarily mean that you have bowel cancer but if you have
one or more symptoms for 4-6 weeks you should see your Doctor.
“You may think that doing the test sounds a bit embarrassing or unpleasant but it only
takes a few minutes and is an effective way to detect bowel cancer early”
